چکیده

Some of the problems presented by the carcinogenic substances that have been extracted from human tissues will be solved only when these compounds have been chemically identified and assayed. At the present time very difficult questions have been raised by the fact that the substances have been found in the tissues from some patients dead of cancer but not in others, sample of 67 human livers, 1 in 5 contain detectable carcinogens. It would not be very satisfactory to "explain" on a fortunate chance encounter of "1 in 5" why Schabad (9, 10), who was the first to open this line of investigation, found a benzene extract of a noncancerous liver to be inactive while the benzene extract of a can-

Induction of accessory limbs and of sarcoma in the Newt (Triturus viridescens) with carcinogenic substances.

Among adult vertebrates, only some of the amphibia are capable of regenerating their limbs. Several years ago experiments were begun in an attempt to induce neoplasia in limb tissues capable of such regeneration. The common newt, Triturus viridescens, was used because of its hardiness and availability. The injection of a variety of supposedly carcinogenic substances into the forelimb of over 50...

On the Mechanism of Action of Carcinogenic Substances*

In the study of cancer one of the central problems is the elucidation of the pathogenesis of malignant tumors. The direction taken by such studies varies in accordance with prevailing points of view on the etiology of cancer. Since the discovery of carcinogenic compounds by Cook, Kennaway, and others ( i , 7), the theory of a chemical etiology of malignant tumors has been advanced. According to...

Heavy Metals Concentrations and Human Health Risk Assessment for Three Common Species of Fish from Karkheh River, Iran

Background: The concentrations of heavy metals in the tissues and organs of fishes indicate the concentrations of heavy metals in water and their accumulation in food chains. In the present study, the concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, V and Pb in three common species of fish and the potential health risks to local residents via consumption of the fishes were estimated.  Methods: The con...

On the fate of carcinogenic hydrocarbons in the animal body.

The study of the fate of carcinogenic substances in the body was first taken up m 1934-36 by Chahncrs and Peacock (8, 17), Berenblum and Kcndal ( 1, 2), Hicgcr ( 11 ), Lorenz and Shear (14) and others. Extension of knowledge in this field is necessary for furthcr progress in studying the mode of action of carcinogenic substances and the pathogcncsis of malignant tumors induced by these chemical...

Dietary modifiers of carcinogenesis.

Dietary components express a wide range of activities that can affect carcinogenesis. Naturally occurring substances in foods have been shown in laboratory experiments to serve as dietary antimutagens, either as bioantimutagens or as desmutagens. Dietary desmutagens may function as chemical inactivaters, enzymatic inducers, scavengers, or antioxidants. Dietary components may also act later in t...
